Time Coupling Methods. Construction Scheduling and Time/Cost Optimization

This book deals with the scheduling of construction projects and the associated search for the best algorithms for job scheduling in time coupling methods (TCM). Metaheuristic algorithms applicable to TCM are considered. The algorithms make it possible, among other things, to solve optimization problems connected with the minimization of construction project duration. Currently, foreign publications on construction work planning focus on scheduling by means of artificial intelligence, i.e. genetic algorithms, neural networks and fuzzy sets.

Time coupling methods (TCM) make it possible to plan construction works in time and space and they are the natural conseqeuence of the adopted work division structure and technology. Technical and organizational constraints are exoressed through time couplings and a matrix model.

TCMs differ from the metnods LSM, RSM, LOB, CPM/PERT mainly in that the demand for resources are specified and certain assumotions, e.g. no stoppages for gangs in TCM I, no stoppages on work lots (building structures) in TCM II, stoppages for gangs and on work lots in TCM III, are made already at the very beginning. Otner additional constraints are taken into account in TCMs IV, V and VI.

The book contains a practical methodology which can be a great benefit to all those involved in the construction work planning.
